Short Film Making Project

First off, I really enjoyed doing this project. I thought it was awesome that we were able to display what we had learned so far and put our minds together to make a short film! The film genre that my group chose to do was comedy-horror. We decided to film it inside of an empty classroom, and have me walk in thinking there was still class today, only to find on the white board written "No Class." All of a sudden, the blinds strangely start closing, and while I went over to check it out, the door slams behind me. The camera pans to see someone walking slowly to me, but when I turned around because of the sound, the girl is gone. Because of these strange happenings, I decided I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, but as I'm walking out, the lights start to flicker. I find that the door is locked, and I turn around to see that all of the chairs have been flipped upside down. While I continue to struggle with the door, the camera shows the same girl from before standing at the back of the classroom just staring at me. I turn around and see her, accepting my fate. She whips out her umbrella and strikes me with it, killing me. She then just walks over my body and leaves the classroom. It was a tragic ending to a girl who just showed up for class not knowing it was cancelled.

One of my favorite parts of this project was just coming up with the ideas. We all just kinda sat around, and we were throwing ideas off of one another. When someone would say something, others would take ideas from that and say other things. I think that in many cases, it can be not the most fun to work in groups for projects at school, so this was one of the first times I really did enjoy it. Then, once we were done with coming up with the concept and we started filming, there were still many ideas that we were bouncing off of each other. It became much more real once we were actually in the classroom and started filming. Actually putting it together was much harder than I thought it would be. It was cool to see the finished product however, with all of our ideas put together to form one short film.

One of the hardest parts for me in this project was having to be an actor. One thing about me is that I cannot keep a straight face for the life of me, so having the camera in my face for most of this film was very difficult, especially it being a horror I was supposed to be scared. My brother is a professional actor and is currently attending DePaul for acting, so it being turned to me was very weird. I just tried to have fun with it. I also am under no delusion that I did a great job, and I know that I laughed through the entire thing, but it was still a really fun experience for me to be apart of.

If given the opportunity, I would definitely do this project again. I am glad that it was apart of this curriculum because not only did it give us the opportunity to show our knowledge, but we were able to get a glimpse of what it is like to be apart of the industry. Since I have competed on Ninja Warrior before, I know what it is like to be on a television show set. I know that ninja and actual tv shows are very different feelings, but I have seen what its like to be on sets where nothing runs smoothly and there are cameras everywhere. I enjoyed it being a film though, instead of a reality type tv show. I have always thought that cameras and entertainment things like shows and movies are really cool, so if I could do something like this again I would jump at the opportunity.
