Get Out Film Review

Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele in 2017, is a horror comedy film. The plot of the movie is a very interesting one. An interracial couple that go by the names Chris and Rose are going to meet Rose's parents for the first time. Chris is skeptical at first if Rose's parents are going to be okay with him being black or not but Rose is very reassuring that they will be. Everything seems normal when they arrive, but it soon turns very strange. Chris keeps getting little backhanded things said to him that are pretty racist, and there are also two black people that work at the house with the family. In this day and age, you don't see that anymore so it raised some red flags. The family hosts a party where everyone is very white except for one other man, who's named Logan. Chris gets very weird vibes from Logan and eventually the man lashes out at him when he tries to take a picture of him. After this incident, Rose and Chris go on a walk and it is at this moment we see the first glimpse into how weird the family truly is. They start having an auction for Chris where the guests at the party are trying to buy him. Fast forward and eventually the family turns fully against Chris and they lock him up in their basement. Chris outsmarts the family and gets out, but at the cost of killing everyone in the family. His best friend, who is the comedic relief throughout the movie, is the one that saves Chris in the end. The entire movie is very captivating and it's hard to tell whats next. Thats what I love most about Jordan Peele's movies, they always have some crazy twist that brings everything in the movie together.

I think my favorite part about this movie was that it was never predictable. Going into it, I had never heard anything about the movie at all so I had no idea what to expect. I didn't even know the plot, so when new surprising things kept happening throughout, it was very thrilling. The setting is also nothing out of the norm for the most of the movie. In most horror films, the movie could take place in scary houses or towns or old places, but for this one, it was just a normal house. The only strange thing about it was that it was in the middle of no where with the neighbors being way out of ear shot. The party that was hosted looked fairly normal as well. Even when the auction was going on, it was a normal setting. I think that added a lot to the creepiness of the movie. It signified that messed up or sketchy things can happen in the most normal places and families. The only time the setting became out of the norm was towards the end when Chris was finally captured. He was put in a basement and locked up in a chair with not much else to it except for a single tv and a deer head. There was also a room where the brain surgeries took place. It closely resembled an operating room from a hospital, but when it is put inside a house, it is not so normal. Jordan Peele did a great job creating something that out of context can look so ordinary, but when everything is put together it could be someones worst nightmare.

This is one of those movies that really makes you think. When I finished watching it, there was so many "ohhh" moments afterword, meaning that throughout the course of the movie, small things happened that I thought were insignificant, that turned out not to be. The major one that sticks out to me was when Rose said that her and Chris should go on a walk after the incident with Logan. At the time, it seemed like a nice thing to do so Chris could take a break from the party, come to find out it was so that the auction could happen without him there. It was crazy to find out that Rose was in on the plan the entire time because she seemed to be fully on Chris' for most of the movie. Another realization that happened involved the two workers on the property. After finding out what the family does to the black people that visit their home, it became very clear that what they wanted to do to Chris, was something they already did to the others. A third and final example, still involving the workers on the property was when Chris sort of ruined the home by killing several people in it, and Georgina, the woman worker, got mad at him but it was because her brain was the person who owned the house before.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie and it inspired me to watch other movies by Jordan Peele. I just recently watched Us and it was very similar to Get Out which made me very happy. Jordan Peele is clearly a very talented director and Get Out is a great example of some of his best work.
